He calls himself thecatamites. This guy's a fucking magician. Srrsly. He made this game called Space Funeral using RPGMaker2003. Now this should set off alarm bells and stuff cause RPGMaker is founded on templates. Templates that build standard, tried, tired, formulaic JRPGs, but this is where thecatamites's magic powers come into play cause right from the main menu screen, he's already playing around with your expectations and assumptions of what JRPGs are.

And then you select "Blood," and you're tossed into a game world drawn in MS Paint with some awesome, fuzzy Japanese noise rock, and you notice that your character is always crying, and your dad's tossing you out of the house, but before you leave, listen to your JRPG instincts. Check out that chest looking thing off to the right.

I wish thecatamites had a blog or something that I could link. He's too indie for that though. He just pops up every now and then with a new game release and disappears again. Doo's a fucking magician I tell ya.happybuffethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16704822988617915300noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1152435643108875690.post-21264070002629653992011-01-20T14:39:00.000-08:002011-01-21T12:45:38.020-08:00Thursday Night is Community Nightbut the show's getting pretty stale, so screw that. Let's watch someone talk about the indie gaming community instead.

Things to take note of before watching:

Independent game developers take pride in calling themselves indie. Indie is equivalent to "DIY LO-FI FO LYFE!!1!" (mmMMm, HELLZ YEA).

SNES = Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It's a gaming console from back in the 90s.

Farmville is the definitive "social game" by Zynga and can be played on Facebook. The term "social gaming" has taken on a very negative and dirty connotation with indies. These games are viewed as lacking in actual gameplay, and instead, hide away unlockable items and content behind how many friends you've invited or how long you've played both of which generate ad revenue. The mass appeal though is that players can then customize and dress up their avatars or their farms or their pets with this unlockable content and then share it with their friends or anyone else on the internet.

Sleep is Death is an interactive storytelling game by Jason Rohrer. It requires two computers, two copies of the game, and a network connection between them. Player A plays the "storyteller" who has complete control over the characters, scenes, and areas that Player B interacts with. Player B explores this world and communicates with the in-game characters by typing (to PlayerA). Player A then responds or takes an action or changes the scene entirely, and then it's Player B's turn again to explore and take an action. Both players work together to push the story in whatever they want. Think of it is as improvisational theater as gameplay. (BUY AND PLAY THIS GAME ALREADY)

The Return (again)So like, a decade has passed, and I'm officially a college graduate. Pretty sweeet, righ? Totally starting off this new decade with nothing to do. I'll get a job eventually, but for now, I'm a be bustin out dem drankz and binging on video games and hopefully making some too.

And since I've been playing so much, I got a top quality grade A list for you guys. I might do reviews. I might not. We'll see.

But yeah, first off we got Hydorah, a side-scrolling SHMUP, that takes influence from Gradius and R-Type. Work on them reflexes and stretch them fingers cause this is one tough cookie.

http://www.locomalito.com/juegos_hydorah.php

You should check out the making of PDF they have down at the bottom of their page too. Pretty fun to look through. Locomalito has done quite a few games though, so check 'em all out. L'Abbaye des Morts is another goodie by them.

Next up, we got Knytt Stories, a platformer, but of the atmospheric persuasion. Nifflas is known for lively worlds and this game is my favorite of the ones I've played. Knytt Stories is relaxed, and extremely pretty. Definitely a Sunday Night Wind Down candidate. I actually enjoyed standing around in game and just watching the scenery.
Be sure to download the expansion too!

Last for this list is a flash game near and dear to my heart. This is definitely in my top 5 for 2010. Matt Thorson has spent years working on level design concepts and it really shows in Give Up Robot 2. Plus, the music is catchy, and the visuals are top notch. Everyone must play this game!

Check out his blog and other work at http://mattmakesgames.com

Anyway, yeah, hopefully I can do this more consistently. I'm actually starting work on a platformer, so keep in touch.

Totally going on a banana tear.

The flow and feel of the game is similar the original Mario Bros. Not the platformers with Yoshi or mushrooms. The arcade version with the "Pow!" box and the angry crabs. The difference is that this is single player only (although multplayer would easily put this in my top 5 games of all time) but more importantly, we totally get to go nuts on the green monster things with a diverse arsenal of weapons.

Looks the same, right?

See, the focus of the game is on these weapons. The point system isn't based on how many things you kill or how long you survive. Instead, it's based on how many crate boxes you pick up. A new crate box spawns at a randomized location on the map whenever you pick one up, and within these boxes is the weapon you get and use till you get to the next box. In Super Crate Box, there is no weapon of choice because you have no choice.

This places a unique restriction on the player, but allows for some of the most flexible gameplay I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The game shifts gears everytime a crate is picked up. Each weapon requires a different approach, and a different strategy depending on the situation.

The mini-gun has a wide spread with an extremely fast rate of fire that allows the player to completely mow down any oncoming army, BUT the insane recoil forces you to remain stationary when firing. Mines decimate everything within its blast radius, BUT you're gonna have to leap frog your way out of trouble while it arms itself. And then you end up with the katana, and well, you're fucked.

I am the chicken, and I am clucked.

In other news, my cousin came back from visiting her boyfriend in Colorado, and for some reason, she took home his Xbox 360, and even more surprising she let me have it. I'm not one to ask questions or anything, so yeah, I'll be putting up reviews of Xbox 360 games pretty soon (since I'm totally getting Super Meat Boy, Limbo, and the Scott Pilgrim game pretty soon).happybuffethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16704822988617915300noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1152435643108875690.post-35034607880665281632010-11-23T09:53:00.000-08:002010-11-27T22:57:48.251-08:00TACO SMASH DEMOPersonal projects always seem more interesting and much more fun when actual work/school project due dates get closer. I had a couple of drinks last night in anticipation of a ton of homework, but instead I worked on Taco Smash for a couple of hours.

So far, the main menu looks pretty sweet. The "Options" option actually doesn't do anything yet, but it will soon. As for additions since the last update, I added "Tommy", which is the sand castle building kid, and "Mommy" which is the evil witch oppressor. Senor Liberator has been granted the patent pending taco smash ability.
I woke up after the nicest dream that I've had in a while -- quite possibly ever. In the dream, my friends and I were at the beach, we when we were about to leave, one of them picked up someone's shoe and we started playing catch with it. Everyone was laughing and smiling and the sun was out.

Then I woke up, and the day before, it had been raining throughout the day, so I was pretty excited to look out the window and check out the sky with huge, clean white, puffy clouds, and yup, great sky today.

Later on, in the afternoon, my whole family gathered at my cousin's house to celebrate her 21st birthday. No drinking or anything. Instead, we got together, nostalgia'd and laughed over pansit, tri-tip, and WingStop. My god that was amazing.

But during all of this, my blog came up, and it turns out, people really look forward to new posts, so yeah, I'm back with renewed blogging fervor.

And to my buddy that wanted MOAR GAMEZ, check these out. Still involves tons of jumping though. Will find less jumping games and will be posting reviews of these games soon.
Maybe it's a good thing that I haven't gotten my hands on SMB.

Yahh, we all want Super Meat Boy.

The first of the two is a rouge-like dungeon crawler. The twist is that the boys over at QCF Designs have turned each randomly generated dungeon into a single screen puzzle. The game's developers say that you'll be fighting "your way through a fantasy dungeon in 10 minutes or less," but my god. I haven't been so cracked out on a game since... ever.

See, the thing that makes Desktop Dungeons a puzzle (and so addicting) is that players are limited to a finite number of resources with which to solve how to level up and kill the boss.

This is the 3rd game I've stared while writing this review.

These resources range from mana potions, to glyphs (spells), even to the number of enemies. There have been countless times where I killed higher level enemies too early, leaving myself with a bunch of level 1s and 2s at the end game which made it impossible for me to level up to the boss's level.

What's even more intriguing is that there is always a solution. There are no dice rolls in Desktop Dungeons. You are always aware of all risks. In fact, mousing over enemies tells you whether or not your next attack will be safe or death.

But if anything I can use the fireball glyph which is always safe, but no, no, that takes up too much mana and I've discovered most of the map. Yeah, but I have mana potions. Oh, but I'm a Sorcerer. I have mana shield, and I regen health from casting. I guess I'll just attack then cast. Wait, but should I even kill this? What would Dracul do?

wtf m8

Every attack, every step, the deity you choose to align with -- every decision must be calculated as the most efficient step towards completing all other remaining tasks, and at this point, the game starts to feel a lot like chess. Decision A leads to these branches of possibilities and Decision B leads to these other branches of possibilities.

And as if the base game wasn't addictive enough, as you thwart each boss's plans, new classes, maps, enemies, and gametypes are unlocked to eat up even more of your time.

Minecraft (for those of you living under a rock) is an online multiplayer sandbox game in which players build and destroy things with blocks. It's an extremely simple concept, but give people a chance to mess around with it and good things happen. It's amazing the things people come up with. I actually check youtube and reddit for Minecraft news just for funzies.

But yeah, watch the video. OH! but check this: When I first played the video, I was listening to "Lover's Carvings" by Bibio, and I thought, "Hey this fits pretty good," and then I listened to the actual music that Cresty (the video producer's reddit username) put on the video, and it made me wanna put on Yo La Tengo's "Our Way to Fall" especially cause of the night time parts in the video.

So like, yeah, try out some songs with the video and lemme know what you guys think fits well.
That made me mad, so I decided to play the original Meat Boy online. It's still fun as ever, and now I'm less mad.

For those not in the know, Meatboy is this ultra simple platformer. You play a tender chunk of meat named Meat Boy who's trying to rescue the love of his life, a clump of bandages named Bandage Girl. You see, she was taken away by this evil flying baby in a machine that's in a tuxedo and bowler hat named Dr. Fetus.

The entire intro cutscene rahh here, brah.

To save Bandage Girl, you'll have to go to hell and back running over crumbling platforms, dodging buzz saws, and jumping over saltfalls (which are waterfalls but with salt). You'll need your brain and super quick reflexes cause this game is hard.

It's not as painful as it looks.

The strange thing is, despite all the deaths, the game is amazingly, ultra fun. It's like when I'm playing the game, I forget about the 27 deaths it took me to get to the end of a level. I only remember the badass wall jump (cause it truly was badass) I had to make between the saltfalls to get that bandage all while I'm dodging homing missiles. It just feels good.

The music isn't good though. It's upbeat and modern, but it's really boring and didn't add to the atmosphere in any way. In fact, it takes away from the entrancing gameplay. I recommend turning off the music and putting your own on.

Anyway, if you're fortunate enough to have an Xbox 360, get Super Meat Boy now, and tell me what you think. If not, here's a link to the original, and you can wait impatiently with me.
I like to slowly ease my way into the new week.

So yeah, I'm gonna start a weekly segment called Sunday Night Wind Down in which I give a link, an anecdote, or anything really that hopefully provides a relaxing experience. Last week, I linked a game called Small Worlds which if you haven't checked it out, check it out.

Aw, man, this song's awesome. Alex has done so much in the past few months. My god, and it's all free to download too. I haven't heard all of The Misstress yet, but I got into Fade Cave. Dude's like experimenting with vocals in that album. Pretty sick, and it really shows in "Campaign."
This game is perfect for these mellow occasions.

Small Worlds was developed by David Shute, a well known name in the indie game community. The focus of Small Worlds is exploration. There really is no threat or any sort of action. In fact, the visuals in the game are pixelated and extremely primitive. Instead, your left with your imagination and mood altering music.

What sets Small Worlds apart from other adventure games is that the entire explored world is always fully visible on screen. Each map starts off as a few large blocky pixels, but as you discover your surroundings, the map starts to pan out and give the world new life, and your mind starts to wander. You start to imagine what the world would be like if it were real. You start to wonder what sort of life could exist there, and it gives you a glimpse into the imaginative mind of Shute all while calming, moving music is playing.
Such a nice song.happybuffethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16704822988617915300noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1152435643108875690.post-53752134228174366392010-10-10T03:41:00.000-07:002010-10-27T03:02:16.779-07:00Nerf Air TatsusIn an effort to imrpove my Street Fighter game, I'll be doing match analyses in a segment I'd like to call Nerf Air Tatsus. In the first installment, I'd like to commentate on a match played by one of my personal favorites, Uryo playing our heroine, Sakura, versus an online buff Markun playing Rufus.

So I'll spoil it for you guys now, but Uryo loses which isn't really all too important. The thing we want to do is figure out what he did right and what he did wrong in the Sakura/Rufus matchup.

Uryo plays the first round really well. As in most X vs. Rufus matchups, the key in the first round is to out footsie your opponent and score a knockdown as soon as possible to prevent Rufus from building meter. Once Rufus has meter, the dynamic of the matchup changes drastically, and X is forced to play it safe in hopes of baiting out EX-Jesus Kick.

So after some sloppy zoning on Markun's part, Uryo scores a counter-hit cr.lk leading to a knockdown BEFORE Markun was able to build any meter. This is the pivotal point of round 1. At this point, Uryo has a massive advantage and is able to ramp up the offensive pressure with impunity. He opens at 0:38 with a jump hp into a really cool baiting tactic. Uryo walks forward through Rufus's block stun as if he's going for a throw attempt, but instead, punishes Markun's OS tech with an lk Tatsu. This is a pretty nifty tactic for multiple reasons: 1) It jumps over any lk OS tech scoring a counter hit, 2) it does chip damage even if the opponent continued to block, and 3) it's neutral frame advantage on block so Uryo can continue to keep up the pressure.

He goes for this trick again after he's pushed Markun into the corner, but it's blocked and his throw attempt is stuffed by EX-Messiah. Anyway, the round plays itself out after this point and nothing interesting really happens.

Now the second round is where we start to see mistakes in Uryo's play. First is the wake up fierce at 1:17. There's just no reason to be throwing this out there. It easily could've been punished and potentially been counter-hit fodder. Rufus was already in the air at this point and it just wasn't gonna hit anything. The next semi-interesting mistake deals is just a knowledge thing and maintaining composure to apply that knowledge. At 1:30, Uryo is able to bait out EX-Messiah and he knew what he was baiting out, but he didn't know how to punish it. He tries for a sweep, but the only punish in that situation is Shouken. It must've just slipped his mind. The last thing is also a knowledge thing. Against Rufus (and Cammy), Sakura is able to OS tech with fierce to stuff dive kick/throw mixups.

In the last round, Uryo just loses composure after some compounded mistakes leading to a loss. Nothing too interesting to say about the last round.happybuffethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16704822988617915300noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1152435643108875690.post-48632874260995950642010-10-09T02:51:00.000-07:002010-10-27T03:02:38.751-07:00"Face It"The new Beach Fossils 7" is still three days away, but check it dudes, you can check out one of the tracks ("Face It," ldoz) over at I Guess I'm Floating.

I've been playing their self-titled non-stop for a couple of months now, but lemme tell ya, I ain't really feelin' "Face It." Don't get me wrong; the song's really pretty, and I'm definitely still stoked about the release, but pretty isn't what got me going.

Anyway, more about the track:
They've still got that deflated vibe going on, and the overall feel and flow of the song is similar to "Wide Awake" off of the EP. The guitars, while still lo-fi and reverbed, gracefully weave within one another, and honestly I was thinking The Cure the first time I heard the track. Dustin's got some female vocals backing him this time around too. Not sure who it is, but yeah.

I Guess I'm Floating (direct to Beach Fossils):

So like, check this: You're at a park or a playground or something and all these kids are having fun swinging and playing tag and storming the jungle gym and flipping through the spider web thing, but you notice that one of the kids's mothers is coming to pick him or her up, and this kid's mom is trying to pull him off of the monkey bars.

You keep defending and pushing back the attackers until you lose or it reaches 8pm cause these are after all responsible, hard working children and they want time to do their homework and rest for the next school day, but once the clock strikes 3pm, they will once again join Senor Liberator in the good fight. After each day, the park/playground gets bigger and more kids join the battle, and like the difficulty ramps up too cause like, army parents attack and you're getting bombarded by waterballoon airstrikes and the balloons are filled with sticky juice and stuff.
